A cold plunge in Dubai costs AED 55,000 to 260,000 installed and holds 5 to 8 °C through August when its chiller is sized for 34 °C tap water and a hot plant space, its basin is insulated on every face and its condenser sits in shade with real airflow. Most plunge installations in the Gulf fail on one of those three points, which is why we design the cold room with the same care as the hot one. Why the Gulf is the hardest place to keep water cold
A chiller datasheet written in Europe assumes 15 °C incoming water and a 25 °C room. In Dubai, in August, the tap water arrives at 32 to 35 °C and the plant cupboard or garden enclosure sits at 40 to 45 °C. Three things follow:
- The chiller has to remove three times more heat on the first fill than the datasheet imagines, and it has to keep removing heat that leaks in through every uninsulated surface, every day.
- The condenser, which dumps that heat to the air, works far below its rated capacity in 45 °C air, so a “1 HP” unit behaves like half of one.
- A basin without insulation, or with a bare stone shell against a warm slab, gains heat faster than a small chiller can remove it, and the water settles at 14 °C instead of 6.
We size for these conditions: a 1.5 HP chiller for an insulated 800-litre indoor basin, 2 HP for an outdoor 1,200-litre plunge, always with the condenser in shade and with a clear airflow path. The chiller sizing guide has the numbers.

Indoor basins are built in a waterproofed concrete or fibreglass shell, insulated with 50 mm closed-cell foam on every face, and clad in basalt, granite, honed marble or mosaic with a non-slip entry step and a grab rail. Outdoor plunge pools are built like a small swimming pool with a dedicated plant room, a shaded condenser enclosure, an insulated cover for the day, and an entry deck in timber or stone. Both include the chiller, a circulation pump, a fine filter, an ozone or UV sanitiser, a skimmer, a digital controller and the electrical submission.
Where the plunge sits
The walk from the sauna door to the water should be three steps. In villa basements in Dubai Hills, Jumeirah and Emirates Hills we set the basin into the corridor opposite the custom sauna door, often under a skylight or a lightwell. On Palm Jumeirah and Jumeirah Bay terraces the plunge is outdoors, beside an outdoor sauna pavilion, with the chiller in the pool plant room. In apartments the honest answer is usually a well-insulated freestanding tub with a compact chiller, and we say so; a built-in basin needs a drain and a structural check that most towers will not approve.
Water: sanitation, filtration and changes
A cold plunge is a small pool at the temperature of a refrigerator, and it needs pool discipline. We fit an ozone generator or a UV lamp on the circulation loop, a 20-micron filter, and a skimmer, and we ask clients to shower before each use. With that, the water is changed monthly and the basin is wiped down weekly. Without it, the water goes cloudy in a week and the client spends more on water than on electricity. Dubai water is hard, so a scale inhibitor on the fill line protects the chiller’s heat exchanger; we include it.
Power and approvals
Chillers of 1 to 2 HP draw 1.2 to 2.4 kW on single-phase; 3 HP units need three-phase. Each chiller goes on its own circuit with an RCD and an outdoor-rated isolator where the unit is outside. A single-phase chiller is usually not a DEWA load change on a villa, but when the plunge is built together with a sauna or steam room, its circuit is included in the same submission, described on the DEWA approval page. Outdoor plunge pools in master communities need a community NOC for the excavation and the plant room, which we file with the design set.
Temperature and protocol
We commission indoor basins at 6 to 8 °C and outdoor plunges at 8 to 10 °C, and give the client a written protocol: heat first, two to four minutes in the cold, controlled nasal breathing, out before shivering starts, and a rest before the next round. Colder is not better; 4 °C is for experienced users. Six to fourteen weeks
Two weeks of design and submissions, three to five weeks for the chiller, shell and stone, one to three weeks on site for an indoor basin and up to four for an outdoor pool with a plant room. Commissioning includes filling, reaching set point, sanitiser calibration and a first plunge with you. Two years on workmanship and waterproofing, manufacturer warranty on the chiller, and an annual service under the maintenance plan where the filter, sanitiser and refrigerant charge are checked before summer. The plunge is the second room in nearly every villa wellness suite we build.
